DDOS - Managed Distributed Denial of Service Protection (MDDP)

Basic Service Description
Working in concert with Cisco Guard DDOS mitigation appliances, Cisco Traffic Anomaly Detectors detect the presence of a potential DDoS attack, divert traffic destined for the targeted device, and identify and block malicious traffic in real-time, without affecting the flow of legitimate, mission-critical transactions. As a result, business operations of targeted organisations continue running, even while under attack, ensuring critical corporate assets are always protected.

The Pipex MDDP service is a network based traffic filter that diverts Distributed Denial of Service attacks. This service is available to customers that take a Web Hosting or Access service from Pipex.

The customer's traffic is analysed by Detectors that monitor any change in the traffic profiles that breaches stated thresholds (number of get requests per user per second, anti spoofing algorithms etc). Thresholds are defined in one of two ways:

• Platinum MDDP customers have their thresholds set by a 7 day period of learning by the Guards immediately following installation
• Silver MDDP customers use a default profile, defined by Pipex

Once the thresholds are set, the customer is removed from the Guards and the Detectors are activated. The Detectors examine the customer's traffic and compare to the thresholds that have been set. If thresholds are breached, the traffic is routed through the Guards for detailed analysis and cleaning. Seasonal peak traffic is not filtered in this way, since the Guards are looking for change in the type of traffic as opposed to simply the volume.
